PremiseAfter years of searching for extraterrestrial intelligence, Dr. Ellie Arroway finds conclusive radio proof that includes plans for a mysterious machine.
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 62%
On this week’s episode, we talk about Contact (1997), rated 62% on Rotten Tomatoes. Contact was directed by Robert Zemeckis and based off a story by Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan. The film stars Jodie Foster, Matthew McConaughey, James Woods, John Hurt, Tom Skerritt, and Angela Bassett.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Stranger Things, Wayward Pines, and The Kettering Incident
  • Vikings
  • Atomic Blonde
  • The Leftovers, and then satisfying/unsatisfying show endings
  • A Ghost Story and experimental cinema

  • In last week’s episode, Max referred to When Harry Met Sally (1989) as a 90s film, however he was wrong. Yet he stands by his word about it influencing 90s cinema.

Questions we ask:

  • Is Contact a precursor/similar to Arrival (2016)?
  • Do Jodie Foster and Matthew McConaughey work as romantic partners?
  • What’s up with James Woods?
  • What really worked and what didn’t?
  • Were there any plot problems that ruined the film?
  • Did the ending bother us?
  • Do we believe Dr. Arroway?
